Every difficulty score uses a six-point scale. It blends results from the New York Times' paid tester panel with roughly 2,500 publicly shared score grids, each weighted before the final number is calculated. When a source isn't available yet, the remaining weights rebalance automatically so the score still reflects the data that is in. That final number is what sets the Easy, Medium, Medium+, or Hard label you see across the site.
Data sources and methodology
- Combined score. The headline and rankings come from a weighted blend of all available sources, not any single one in isolation.
- Guess distribution. The bars come from one internally consistent public-results sample. We don't mix bucket counts from different cohorts.
- Source safeguards. A public-results source only counts after its collection method and minimum sample size have been validated. Until then, it doesn't affect the score or distribution.
- Daily updates. The difficulty score and distribution refresh each day. Every page pulls from the same validated daily record, so the figures stay consistent across the site.
These figures use aggregate counts calculated from publicly shared score grids. This page does not display usernames, profiles, or individual posts.
